Advanced Site Characterization and Combined In-Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) / Enhanced Bioremediation Achieve 90% Mass Removal at Large Petroleum Site

An on-site storage tank released 5,000 gallons (19,000 liters) of petroleum hydrocarbons at a site in Northern Ontario, Canada. The project was managed and completed by Vertex, a Canadian environmental remediation company, specializing in in-situ treatment.

In order to strategically pinpoint the location of hydrocarbon mass and most effectively target the delivery of remedial reagents, Vertex deployed advanced site characterization using a membrane interface probe (MIP) and laser induced fluorescence(LIF). Based on the detailed data derived from these advanced tools and the analytical data, Vertex designed and implemented an aggressive in-situ remedial action plan based on reagent injection. To effectively treat the contaminants, Vertex chose to use a combined technologies approach by integrating in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and enhanced aerobic bioremediation through the application of RegenOx® and ORC Advanced®, two widely used and proven reagents from REGENESIS.

The application of these products was completed using temporary injection points that were injected using both bottom-up and top-down injection methods at depths ranging between 9 ft. (3 m) and 78 ft. (26 m) below ground surface. In total, over 441,000 lbs.(200,000 kg) of remedial reagents (RegenOx and ORC Advanced) were injected into the subsurface over a two year period. This approach resulted in significant mass reductions across the site and a 90% petroleum hydrocarbon decrease (from 240,000 ug/L to < 1400 ug/L) in one of the most highly impacted wells.
