cardinal-medical-phoenix-award-1024x666 Brownfield Project Using LST® Technologies Wins National Award for Vapor Intrusion Mitigation SuccessLand Science Technologies (LST), a wholly-owned division of REGENESIS®, is proud to announce that a revitalization project using the vapor intrusion solutions, Geo-seal® and Vapor-Vent was recently recognized with the Phoenix Award at the National Brownfields Training Conference. The conference, which is a premier industry trade show and training event hosted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and International City/County Management Association (ICMA), focuses on environmental rejuvenation to stimulate economic activity in enervated areas.

Each year, 20 of the most impressive brownfield revitalization projects from across the nation’s 10 EPA districts are handpicked for the Phoenix Awards, the most widely respected designation of excellence in brownfield redevelopment. The winning projects are chosen by a panel of environmental professionals, government and business leaders based on criteria including: “Magnitude of the project, innovative techniques, solutions to regulatory/social issues and impact upon the community.”

The winner for EPA Region 5 was the Cardinal Health Distribution Center in Detroit, Michigan. For this project, the environmental consulting firm AKT Peerless designed a vapor mitigation system, which included the application of both Geo-Seal® and Vapor-Vent™ to the entire footprint of a medical supply warehouse (275,000-squarefeet) to mitigate the vapor intrusion risk. The successful outcome at this site is resulting in the revitalization of the 17.5-acre area, and the creation of a facility that is expected to bring 140 jobs to the region.

Inundated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including chlorinated solvents, the 80-property assemblage was blighted and severely contaminated from the polluted remains of dilapidated factories, fuel storage operations, a rail yard, paint shops and commercial structures. Utilizing its proprietary, state-of-the-art Geo-Seal and Vapor-Vent offerings across the site’s expansive footprint, the project team was able to construct a highly effective, resistant barrier—sealing the area between the subgrade and building foundation from chemical vapor intrusion.

“Land Science’s performance on the redevelopment of what is now the Cardinal Health Medical Distribution Center underscores the advancements made in the field of vapor intrusion mitigation,” said REGENESIS CEO and president, Scott Wilson. “We are proud and honored to have contributed to this project.”
