with 3DMe and HRC outperforming commodity chemicals in the pilot trial

Summary

REGENESIS were commissioned by Tamdown and AECOM to design a remedial solution to treat residual contamination of Chlorinated Solvents, BTEX as well as List 1 Pesticides/Herbicides at a chemical works, that was untreatable using process-based remediation methods. Regenesis succesfully implemented an integrated remediation approach using 3-D Microemulsion® (3DMe) and Hydrogen Release Compound® (HRC).

3DMe and HRC were initially piloted parallel to EHC, Emulsified Vegetable Oil, Cheese Whey and Fructose. The 3DMe and HRC products outperformed all other injectable substrates during the pilot trial, clearly demonstrating they were most effective for both distribution and treatment.

Design & Application

A third party consulted delineated the plume by MIP analysis. Once the extent of contamination had been established, initial remedial works comprised of steam injection followed by electro-thermal heating combined with multi-phase recovery. REGENESIS’ technologies were then implemented to address the dissolved phase contamination remaining in both the shallow and deeper aquifer.

3DMe and HRC were injected into injection wells; targeting the more permeable layers of the highly heterogeneous aquifer, where the highest contaminant concentrations had been recorded, ensuring maximum results were yielded from the treatment.

What’s Special?

  • The seamless integration of 3DMe and HRC within a complex treatment train of four other technologies successfully reduced contaminant concentrations by 90-100% across the 1,400 m2 area.
  • After a rigorous pilot trial, the data proved that 3DMe and HRC were more effective than alternative electron donors substrates.
