What is 2,4-dichlorophenol?

2,4-dichlorophenol is a colorless crystalline solid with a medicinal odor. Melting point 45°C. Sinks in water. Strong irritant to tissues; toxic by ingestion.

Uses

2,4-DCP is used as a feedstock for the manufacture of certain methyl cmpd used in mothproofing, antiseptics & seed disinfectants. 2,4-DCP is also reacted with benzene sulfonyl chloride to produce miticide or further chlorinated to pentachlorophenol, a wood preservative.

Sources & Potential Exposure

Related to animals (but non-veterinary) e.g., animal husbandry, farming of animals/animal production, raising of animals for food or fur, animal feed, products for household pets. Products used on crops or related to the growing of crops. There is limited evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of combined exposures to polychlorophenols or to their sodium salts. There is evidence suggesting lack of carcinogenicity of 2,4-dichlorophenol in experimental animals. However, combined exposures to polychlorophenols or to their sodium salts are possibly carcinogenic to humans
