REGENESIS Remediation Technologies Launches PlumeStop™ Colloidal Biomatrix at Major International Remediation Conference

REGENESIS Remediation Technologies Launches PlumeStop™ Colloidal Biomatrix at Major International Remediation Conference

MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA, May 19, 2014 — REGENESIS, a global leader in advanced environmental remediation technologies, has announced the commercial launch of a fundamentally new and innovative remediation technology called PlumeStop™ Colloidal Biomatrix. As the name implies, it was developed to stop migrating groundwater contaminant plumes by rapidly reducing contaminant concentrations with a sorptive medium while also enhancing or accelerating microbial-driven biodegradation processes. PlumeStop is effective on a wide range of contaminants and provides the first-ever colloidal biomatrix platform, designed to eliminate rebound, stop matrix back-diffusion and meet stringent groundwater standards at contaminated sites. It can also be applied to protect sensitive environmental receptors such as streams, rivers, ponds or lakes and to prevent contaminant migration across property boundaries.

REGENESIS launched PlumeStop at an exclusive brunch event held in conjunction with the Battelle-sponsored Ninth International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds, which began today in Monterey, California. REGENESIS is also a leading co-sponsor of the industry-specific conference, which is typically attended by nearly 1,500 scientists, engineers, regulators and other environmental remediation professionals from around the world.

At the brunch event, titled “Innovating Performance Breakthroughs into Remediation Technologies,”\ REGENESIS’ President and CEO, Mr. Scott Wilson, gave a warm welcome to the audience and introduced Jeremy Birnstingl, Ph.D., Vice President of Environmental Technology at REGENESIS. Dr. Birnstingl spent his portion of the presentation speaking on the progression of PersulfOx® Catalyzed Persulfate, an in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technology which the company successfully brought to market in 2012. PersulfOx advanced the science of activated persulfate through the development of a persulfate-based ISCO product that is easy and safe to handle, contains industry-first, built-in activation and provides contaminant oxidation performance equivalent to the best alternative persulfate activation methods.

Immediately following Dr. Birnstingl, Ben Mork, Ph.D, Vice President of R&D at REGENESIS,  took the stage to speak on PlumeStop. Dr. Mork unveiled the underpinnings of the new technology by explaining that its unique effectiveness is derived from the first-ever use of a highly dispersible, fast-acting, sorption-based technology which captures and concentrates dissolved-phase contaminants within its structure or matrix. Once groundwater contaminants are sorbed (held) onto the matrix, natural biodegradation (bio) processes proceed at an accelerated rate, forming a highly effective “biomatrix.” He also pointed out that Plumestop secures groundwater contaminant concentration reduction very rapidly (in days) and is effective on most organic groundwater contaminants including hydrocarbons, halogenated compounds and a wide variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs).

Additional information about PlumeStop, including a detailed White Paper, is available online at www.plumestop.com.

Brownfield Organization Recognizes Hyder Consulting and REGENESIS with Two Coveted Remediation Awards

Brownfield Organization Recognizes Hyder Consulting and REGENESIS with Two Coveted Remediation Awards

Hyder Consulting and REGENESIS Remediation Technologies accepted two awards at the Brownfield Briefing Awards.

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, November 13, 2013 — Hyder Consulting and REGENESIS Remediation Technologies were pleased with the recent recognition received at the prestigious Brownfield Briefing Awards held in late October. Together they teamed on a challenging, in-situ bioremediation project which received two coveted industry awards: ‘Best In Situ Remedial Treatment’ and ‘Best Project Closure/Verification Process’. The awards ceremony, held annually in London, recognizes best practice and innovation in brownfield development and contaminated site remediation.

The awards were given in recognition of a voluntary, brownfield clean-up project in Little Hulton near Manchester, UK which was undertaken on behalf of Johnsons Apparelmaster. Hyder and Regenesis joined forces to successfully treat historic chlorinated solvent groundwater contamination (pre-dating Johnsons’ ownership) beneath an active dry cleaning facility. The award for ‘Best In Situ Treatment’ came from the fact that this site was heavily impacted with high levels of chlorinated solvents (concentrations in excess of 250,000 μg/L and residual DNAPL) and was successfully treated and closed with a single enhanced bioremediation application. The second award for ‘Best Project Closure /Verification Process’ was presented based on the merits of the multiple lines of technical evidence that were used to document treatment performance and regulatory closure. George Flower, Hyder’s Technical Director specializing in land remediation, and Gareth Leonard, Regenesis’ UK & Scandinavia District Manager, received the two awards from the BBC’s Kate Bellingham. Speaking on behalf of the judges, she announced: “This project was an excellent example of how existing technology can be thoughtfully applied”, and: “This highly technical groundwater remediation project impressed the judges. It demonstrated a range of techniques that were used to gather high quality data to monitor the progress and the success of the project”.

Hyder was responsible for conceptualizing the site, undertaking risk assessments and identifying remedial options, while Regenesis effectively deployed detailed treatment design and managed the application of its innovative in-situ remediation technologies to ensure efficient contaminant treatment without disrupting daily site operations.

In support of the award entry submissions, Peter Butler of Johnsons wrote: “Great teamwork by Johnsons Apparelmaster, Hyder and Regenesis has provided the best outcome, with no disruption to our operation and neighborhood.”

After the ceremony George Flower of Hyder commented: “These awards recognize the collaboration and hard work undertaken by both teams as well as the technical expertise and innovation applied to remediate the groundwater beneath the site, achieving the required result for the client.”

Dr. Jeremy Birnstingl, Managing Director of Regenesis in Europe added: “We’re particularly pleased with this recognition. Treating such high levels of chlorinated solvents with a one-time reagent application demonstrates the power of the technology, properly applied. Given this, it expands the boundaries of what many believed possible, the second award for best verification is doubly welcome.”

Remediation White Paper: Catalyzed Persulfate Advancing In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) Technology for Groundwater and Soil Treatment

Remediation White Paper: Catalyzed Persulfate Advancing In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) Technology for Groundwater and Soil Treatment

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, May 23, 2013 — REGENESIS, a leader in the development of advanced environmental remediation technologies, announces a new white paper detailing its recently introduced sodium persulfate-based remediation technology, PersulfOx™. This new advancement in sodium persulfate technology provides cost and time savings to remediation practitioners across the globe with an all-in-one, easy-to-handle, in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) reagent.

ISCO with sodium persulfate has been widely used since the 1990s as a way to rapidly remove many types of organic contaminants, including both petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, from soil and groundwater. Unfortunately, the most common persulfate ISCO approaches typically require a separate activation step via the use of additional chemical products, such as sodium hydroxide, which are highly exothermic when mixed with water. This added material increases the cost, logistics requirements and safety risk. REGENESIS has significantly advanced persulfate technology with an all-in-one, single component reagent which eliminates the need for a separate chemical activator and employs an advanced catalyst system resulting in equivalent performance and lower health and safety risk.

While PersulfOx is both easier and safer to use than traditional persulfate activation, it has proven highly effective against the most significant types of contaminants, including aliphatic hydrocarbons, BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes), chlorinated ethenes (e.g. perchloroethene, trichloroethene), chlorinated ethanes (e.g. trichloroethane) and oxygenates (e.g. MTBE, TBA, 1,4,-dioxane). For more information in the form of technical bulletins, product details and a recorded webinar documenting PersulfOx performance from a third party, visit www.persulfox.com.

The 14-page PersulfOx white paper, “Catalyzed Persulfate: Advancing In Situ Chemical Oxidation (ISCO) Technology,” briefly reviews the history of ISCO remediation technologies, including hydrogen peroxide, permanganate, percarbonate and conventional sodium persulfate chemistries and discusses the traditional means of activating persulfate. It then introduces and describes in detail the patented PersulfOx chemistry, which includes information on its unique built-in silica-based catalyst. The white paper is available as a PDF file at www.persulfox.com.

PersulfOx™, a New Catalyzed-Persulfate Technology from REGENESIS for Groundwater and Soil Remediation

PersulfOx™, a New Catalyzed-Persulfate Technology from REGENESIS for Groundwater and Soil Remediation

Self-activated PersulfOx™ offers a new, safer way to harness the power of persulfate-based chemical oxidation for in situ contaminated site restoration.

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, October 25, 2012—REGENESIS, a global leader in advanced technologies for contaminated site remediation, recently announced PersulfOx™ Catalyzed Persulfate. This new environmental technology is a patented, sodium persulfate-based in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) reagent designed specifically for groundwater and soil remediation at contaminated sites, including brownfields.

Traditionally, sodium persulfate has been used and activated with the addition of a separate component such as heat, chelated metals, hydrogen peroxide, or a caustic base. These activation processes are inherently complex, costly and can pose certain health and safety risks.  By design, PersulfOx simplifies the activation process and reduces on-site health and safety liability by offering  environmental professionals a new, all-in-one reagent with a built-in catalyst. There is no hazardous activation process, and performance is equivalent to the best alternative persulfate treatments available today. In the field, the material is easily mixed with water and applied into the contaminated area using common subsurface injection techniques or soil mixing tools.

Additionally, the PersulfOx catalyst further increases the product’s effectiveness by providing a microscopic heterogeneous surface where the contaminant and oxidant can converge and oxidation reactions can occur repeatedly. This unique and highly efficient “surface-mediated oxidation” process, first introduced in 2007 with RegenOx®, the company’s first ISCO technology, provides several contaminant-reducing benefits, including:

  • Increased efficiency,as it brings oxidant and contaminant together, isolating the oxidation reaction from soil matrix effects,
  • Direct chemical oxidation,
  • The formation of sulfate-based free radicals which in turn oxidize the contaminant, and
  •  The formation of ancillary free radicals and other oxidizing species which destroy contaminants within the contaminated matrix.

To learn more about PersulfOx, join REGENESIS for a free webinar presentation scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, 2012 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time. Register by visiting www.persulfox.com.

REGENESIS Announces New Technologies for Groundwater Remediation and Vapor Intrusion Mitigation

REGENESIS Announces New Technologies for
Groundwater Remediation and Vapor Intrusion Mitigation

REGENESIS’ “Technologies for Tomorrow” luncheon meeting drew a full house of remediation professionals at the May 2012 Batelle Chlorinated Compounds Conference in Monterey, California.

SAN CLEMENTE, CALIFORNIA, June 5, 2012 — REGENESIS, a world leader in advanced technologies for contaminated site remediation, announces three new remediation-focused products: PetroCleanze™, Retro-Coat™ and Plume Stop™. Ben Mork, Ph.D., Director of Research and Development at REGENESIS, introduced the new technologies in Monterey, California at the recent Battelle-sponsored Eighth International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds.

PetroCleanze™

The first technology, PetroCleanze™, was introduced in late 2011 and is a new formulation of REGENESIS’ widely-used RegenOx® in situ chemical oxidation technology, specifically designed for use at sites with high concentrations of sorbed-phased hyrdrocarbons. Upon injection, PetroCleanze actively stimulates and accelerates the desorption of bound hydrocarbons, moving them from soil into the dissolved phase, where they can be physically extracted more efficiently and rapidly. The technology is particularly valuable where an existing treatment system has reduced contaminant concentrations but is unable to completely remove trapped hydrocarbon, Dr. Mork noted. “For example, by reducing the bound contaminant mass and increasing the dissolved-phase concentrations,” he said, “PetroCleanze can enable a costly pump-and-treat system  to capture increased yields and justify its expense.” PetroCleanze is currently being used on a range of groundwater remediation project sites in the U.S. and International markets.

Retro-Coat™

Secondly, Retro-Coat™ is a recently introduced vapor intrusion technology from REGENESIS’ Land Science Technologies Division, whose widely used Geo-Seal® composite vapor barrier system received the Environmental Business Journal (EBJ) Remediation Technology Award in 2008. Retro-Coat is a new chemical-resistant coating specifically engineered for application directly onto concrete slabs of existing structures. Once applied, Retro-Coat effectively mitigates vapor intrusion from chlorinated solvents and/or petroleum hydrocarbons at brownfield sites. A white paper with detailed technical information will be available later this summer.

PlumeStop™

Finally, PlumeStop™ is a research-stage technology that embodies a fundamentally new approach to the industry-wide problem of groundwater contaminant flux, i.e., the subsurface transport of contaminants, which increases plume size and heightens environmental risk. Once injected into a contaminant plume, PlumeStop begins a series of chemical cross-linking processes, leading to the formation of a porous organic matrix with the ability to capture and immobilize water-borne contaminants without significantly impeding the flow of water. Over time, biological degradation processes ultimately reduce the contaminants to harmless end products.

“With this technology we aim to offer many highly desirable features for groundwater remediation professionals and their clients,” Dr. Mork said. These include the ability to rapidly reduce groundwater contaminant concentrations, sequester contaminants in-place, reduce mass flux (including contaminant back-diffusion) and allow for risk-based closures. Dr. Mork also added, “Overall, the goal of this research is to effectively capture organic contaminants from groundwater and to do it with non-toxic ingredients, a fast reaction time, significant material longevity and minimal effects to groundwater flow rates.” Plume Stop is currently in the R&D stage, but Dr. Mork described the outlook for success as promising, with reductions in dissolved groundwater contaminant concentration reaching 50%-90% over relatively short time periods in early laboratory and in-field beta-testing.
