Narrator: Toronto and the greater Toronto area is a bustling urban region with a population of over nine million. Considered Canada’s largest metropolitan area, Toronto has historically been considered a center for manufacturing, commerce, and technology. The site came with multiple challenges located at a busy intersection with above and underground utilities present, the tight proximity and adjacent properties made installation of a physical permeable reactive barrier, or PRB, costly and impractical. The client intent on addressing the contaminant levels quickly and effectively, agreed to InSitu Remediation Services or IRSL’s recommendation to apply REGENESIS PlumeStop as a barrier to stop BTEX and PHCs from migrating offsite onto city land and nearby properties. Since the area was well established with existing buildings surrounding the impacted areas, a strategic design was required to effectively mitigate the contaminated area with little to no disruption of ongoing businesses. Speed and certainty were paramount in developing an effective solution. IRSL’s project manager, Ben Galbraith, experienced in using innovative technologies like PlumeStop to effectively remediate sites explains that a bio or chemox barrier would not meet his client’s site objectives.

Ben: The site we’re working on is a former active gas station. The site has high level concentrations with a potential for offsite migration of the ground water contamination. When we worked with REGENESIS originally on the site design, we decided to use PlumeStop to create a barrier from the offsite migration of the gasoline products.

Narrator: IRSL, based in southern Ontario, Canada is certified by REGENESIS as both design and applications experts in developing effective remediation approaches using PlumeStop, a revolutionary liquid activated carbon amendment. PlumeStop is an innovative remediation technology, which can achieve very low ground water targets in a short period, and then maintains this treatment for years after a single injection. Once injected, PlumeStop coats the subsurface with one to two micron layers of activated carbon. This then absorbs the contaminants and provides a perfect surface on which to grow bacteria, which then degrade the contamination. This biological degradation frees absorption sites for further contaminant capture. This means that the barrier is self-generated and allows it to remain active for years. PlumeStop barrier was installed down gradient of the source zone, which will allow ground water to flow freely through it while rapidly absorbing and biodegrading any contamination that migrates into the treatment area.

Ben: REGENESIS supported us with the design of the barrier when we approach them about the job and they worked with us to develop the application of the barrier and how should we put in place. We worked hand in hand with REGENESIS to come up with a design knowing site geology and understanding the site conditions to help facilitate the implementation of the barrier.

Narrator: PlumeStop was applied using a direct push method while employing a design that included a dense injection network with points every five feet laterally and three feet vertically. The dense placement allowed for a consistent distribution of the amendment and ensured effective delivery in a glacial-tilled geology. With the effects of the barrier needing to be immediate, the team at IRSL felt confident based on their experience applying PlumeStop to similar sites throughout Ontario, Canada that the solution would meet their client’s objectives.

Ben: REGENESIS products have always been great. Not only do the products work to meet our cycles, but REGENESIS works extensively with us to develop the correct product for the site that would prevent the offsite migration of the gasoline impacts. They’re able to close their site once the barrier’s in place and they can get confirmation sampling that the ground water leaving the site has been cleaned.
