Chlorinated Solvents Remediated in Italy Without Site Disruption

Case study highlights

At a 6,000 m² former industrial site in northern Italy, an integrated in situ treatment combining S‑MicroZVI®, PlumeStop®, and 3‑D Microemulsion® delivered rapid and sustained remediation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater—without disrupting redevelopment activities.

Rapid Achievement of Stringent Regulatory Targets:
Post‑application monitoring showed that chlorinated solvent concentrations in the source area declined quickly to below site‑specific regulatory standards (CSR).

Effective Plume Control Without Off‑Site Migration:
A 100‑meter permeable reactive barrier installed along the downgradient boundary successfully controlled contaminant flux and prevented off‑site plume migration. Sustained reductions across the barrier confirm long‑term performance and protection of downgradient receptors.

Integrated Abiotic and Biotic Degradation:
The combined use of sulfidated zero‑valent iron, sorption media, and biological electron donors promoted complementary abiotic reduction, sorption, and enhanced biodegradation. This synergistic approach minimized daughter‑product accumulation while supporting complete and accelerated contaminant mass reduction.

Low‑Disruption Remediation Aligned With Redevelopment:
All amendments were installed via direct‑push injection over a two‑month period, with no above‑ground treatment systems required. The in situ remedy allowed construction of a new commercial property to proceed immediately following application, supporting brownfield redevelopment without site disruption.
