Full Scale PetroFix Application

Patriot Engineering and EnvironmentalPatriot Engineering was tasked to develop a remediation approach to address dissolved phased petroleum-impacted groundwater caused by leaking underground and above ground storage tanks. REGENESIS worked with Patriot to conduct an on-site beta test of PetroFix Remediation Fluid. Patriot decided to move forward to a full-scale PetroFix application after the pilot test proved highly successful.

Groundbreaking Application of PetroFix Successfully Treats Petroleum Hydrocarbons

PetroFix Pilot Study Leads to Successful Full-Scale ApplicationThis case study reviews a former bulk petroleum storage facility where a groundbreaking application of PetroFix Remediation Fluid, a micro-scale carbon suspension with soluble electron acceptors, is successfully treating petroleum hydrocarbons to regulatory standards.
REGENESIS worked with Patriot Engineering and Environmental to develop a remediation solution using PetroFix, which is uniquely designed to address petroleum hydrocarbon contaminants. The site was considered a viable candidate for the beta test, due to the high contaminant levels and provided a good test of the product’s performance at high concentrations. REGENESIS and Patriot agreed to move forward with the development of the beta test with the intention of evaluating its possible full-scale use following the results of the test. The promising results from the beta test and 12 months of post-injection monitoring indicate PetroFix to be a viable remedial option for this site. Download the full case study to learn more.

Apply Activated Carbon Under Low Pressure to Treat Petroleum Hydrocarbons

Petrofix Remediation FluidPetroFix is an activated carbon remediation technology that is easily injected in situ under low pressure, distributes in the subsurface without fracturing, and includes electron acceptors to stimulate biodegradation of petroleum contaminants in soil and groundwater. This cost-effective technology is designed to remediate petroleum spills and provide immediate results for gas station and UST sites. Matt Valentine, Regional Manager at Woodard & CurranFor Matt Valentine, Regional Manager for Woodard & Curran, a career in environmental remediation was an easy choice as it combined his love of the outdoors with his passion for science. The variety in his work has helped to provide an excellent outlet for combining the many skills he learned over the years in hydrogeology and geochemistry, with a practical approach to addressing real-life problems affecting people and our planet. He shares, “I enjoy finding solutions to problems of all kinds,  including solving technical challenges related to a project, making complex issues easier to understand, or mentoring our younger staff.” Valentine started out as a staff-level geologist in 1990 and advanced to the role of Project Manager, which he held for 13 years prior to merging with Cummings/Riter Consultants, which became Woodard & Curran. Retro-Coat Helps Speed Real Estate Transaction

 

An office building located on the San Francisco Peninsula was left vacant for multiple years. The building is located on top of a capped landfill which is a known methane producer. After a recent change in ownership, it was important for the new owner to make the necessary improvements to the building so that the new tenants could move in quickly. One of these improvements was to update the vapor mitigation system to ensure the tenant’s safety from any harmful vapor intrusion.

The owner enlisted the expertise of Langan to update the vapor mitigation system. Langan proposed using Retro-Coat Vapor Intrusion Coating System because of its proven resistance to harmful vapors and its durability. The owner was thoroughly pleased with this application because it accomplished two goals with a single product: it mitigated the harmful vapor intrusion and provided a durable coating for the floor of the basement level. Combined Remedy Delivers Accelerated Results

 

Real Estate Transaction Requires Fast Acting Treatment of PCE ContaminationDue to the owner’s objective to sell their property, a multi-tenant commercial plaza in Bedford, Massachusetts required remediation of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination in groundwater associated with a historical operator. Because contamination had been identified during due diligence, it was very important to implement a time-effective remediation strategy with minimal disruption to the various operating businesses.

Wilcox & Barton, Inc. chose a combined remedial approach to treat the PCE contamination. This included liquid activated carbon (PlumeStop), an enriched microbial consortium (BDI Plus), and an engineered, hydrogen release compound (HRC). They chose this approach because it combines the fast-acting capabilities of PlumeStop with the reductive dechlorination process enhanced by HRC and BDI. Overall, the combined remedy was considered extremely effective in reducing the PCE contamination in the groundwater at a fast rate.

About the Presenters:

Ginny Yingling  Senior Hydrogeologist, Minnesota Department of Health Environmental Health DivisionGinny Yingling 
Senior Hydrogeologist, Minnesota Department of Health Environmental Health Division

Ginny Yingling is a Senior Hydrogeologist in the Environmental Health Division of the Minnesota Department of Health. She works with a team of Health Risk Assessors to evaluate human exposures to harmful chemicals in drinking water related to man-made contaminated sites. Since 2003, she has been the agency’s lead investigator of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (or PFAS). She has a B.S. from Penn State, and a M.S. from the University of Wyoming, both in Geology, and has over 25 years of experience working on contaminated sites. Ginny is also the co-chair of the Interstate Technology and Regulatory Council’s PFAS Team, a group of over 390 environmental professionals drawn from state and federal agencies, academia, industry, consulting, and public interest groups. The team has developed a series of seven fact sheets on PFAS, conducts PFAS training events, is developing a PFAS risk communication tool-box, and is preparing a detailed report on the current state of knowledge regarding PFAS.

Dr. Kristen Thoreson is the lead inventor of PlumeStop® Liquid Activated Carbon™. She heads the chemical research and product development program at REGENESIS. Her team is focused on developing advanced technologies for the treatment of recalcitrant compounds in mixed environmental media. She is trained as a chemist, and her graduate and post-doctorate research focused on mechanistic investigations of chlorinated ethene degradation pathways using molecular models and compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) for both biotic and abiotic systems. She obtained her BSc in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, and her PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Minnesota. She also spent time as a postdoctoral associate at the Helmholtz Zentrum in Munich, Germany as a part of the Research Unit for Environmental Organic Isotope Chemistry.

Innovative Horizontal Well Application: Creates Zero Disturbance at Gas Station Site

REGENESIS proposed a design including two horizontal wells which would administer a total of four injection events, with enhanced fluid recovery (EFR) events being performed before and after each injection. The existing vertical wells on site and horizontal wells would be used for the EFR activities. The in situ chemical oxidation technology, PetroCleanze™, would be administered to desorb the hydrocarbons and allow for a successful enhanced recovery. PetroCleanze Enhanced DesorptionPetroCleanze™ is a customized formulation of the widely used RegenOx in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) technology. This two-part reagent contains purposefully enhanced, detergent-like properties which significantly increase the desorption rates of hydrocarbons bound in saturated soils. Once the hydrocarbons are liberated into the dissolved-phase, they are more readily available for removal using a range of enhanced recovery techniques. PetroCleanze is designed to increase the viability and efficiency of enhanced recovery techniques such as dual-phase extraction, vacuum enhanced extraction and pump and treat systems.

Monica Young, Project Manager/ Environmental Scientist with CGRSWith over 20 years of environmental experience, Monica Young, Project Manager/Environmental Scientist with CGRS, a leading environmental consulting firm, brings a diverse and accomplished background to her work. In addition to the broad experience she’s garnered while at CGRS over the past 16 years, Young has also served as an Environmental Protection Specialist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Denver, Colorado, where she performed inspections, managed contractors, and worked as a Project Officer for several states. Steve Sliver was named the Executive Director of the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART) in February 2019. A 32-year veteran of state government, he is the former assistant director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s (MDEQ’s) Waste Management and Radiological Protection Division. He was assigned to MPART in April 2018 where he served as MDEQ’s senior representative within the organization. In that role, Sliver led several major MPART initiatives, including the recently completed sampling of public water systems and schools throughout the state for PFAS. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1985.

Patricia Byrnes Lyman has over 25 years’ experience in the environmental industry. Ms. Lyman has worked as an Environmental Engineer for multiple large, international environmental consulting firms; contributing technical input on commercial, military, and industrial facility projects throughout New England and Michigan. Her experience includes complex hazardous waste site investigations and remediation activities involving contaminants of concern such as PCE, TCE, PAHs, petroleum constituents, munitions, and PFAS. Prior to her current role as Investigation/Remediation Manager for the Michigan Department of Military Veterans Affairs (MDMVA), Ms. Lyman most recently worked as a Plant and Systems Engineer managing an anaerobic digester and industrial wastewater pre-treatment facility. In her position with the MDMVA, Ms. Lyman is the PFAS Lead and manages environmental investigation and remediation efforts across the state at Michigan Army National Guard facilities.

Learn More About How PetroFix Destroys PHC ContaminantsThe remediation strategy employed when applying PetroFix is to adsorb contaminants on activated carbon and kickstart biodegradation by adding a nitrate/sulfate blend to establish a diverse microbial community. After the added nitrate and sulfate are exhausted, petroleum degradation will continue via syntrophic processes, meaning the continuous addition of electron acceptors is not required. The combination of an injectable form of activated carbon that can adsorb contaminants and contain them in a finite zone with electron acceptors that will initially degrade the contaminants via anaerobic pathways and promote syntrophic conditions that sustain degradation will expedite the remediation of petroleum-impacted sites. Anticipated Shut-off of Pump and Treat System for PFAS at Superfund SiteDue to past operations at a former solvent recovery facility, the soil and groundwater were contaminated with PFAS. PlumeStop, a cost-effective colloidal activated carbon technology, was applied in situ to rapidly adsorb the PFAS contaminants in the upgradient water onto the micron-scale activated carbon.

After the initial application of PlumeStop, the PFAS concentrations have quickly decreased within the application area. Additionally, sampling shows that the water is not exceeding any of the EPA-determined triggers that are being tested downgradient. The anticipated cost savings that this mode of operation will provide the client is approximately $400,000 per year.

WSP constructed in situ microcosms (ISMs) using aquifer material which were deployed before the amendment injection, with the amendment successfully applied under low pressure, despite wintery conditions. After conducting the pilot test, data for samples collected within the treatment barrier indicated significant contaminant concentration decreases.

Combined Remedy Addresses PFAS Risk at Superfund SiteDue to past operations at the Solvents Recovery Service of New England, the soil and groundwater were contamnated with PFAS. PlumeStop, a cost-effective, in situ colloidal activated carbon technology was applied in a barrier trench application that allows groundwater to flow through a sheet pile wall that was constructed as part of a legacy pump and treat system. The PFAS contamination in the upgradient water is adsorbed by PlumeStop, and the water flows downstream without threatening the downgradient water quality. The potentially responsible party group expects to save an estimated $400,000 annually as a result of the pump and treat system being shut down.

This article published in Wiley’s Remediation Journal reviews a site impacted with petroleum hydrocarbons, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), and other perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFAS). A single application of PlumeStop resulted in a significant reduction of contaminant concentrations to below standards for 18+ months since the injection. Modeling indicates that the PlumeStop application event should keep the PFAS contained within the source area for upwards of 100 years. Details of the remedial design approach are provided along with results of its implementation.

Innovative Concurrent Approach Treats Co-Mingled PlumeA former dry-cleaner in Sacramento released chlorinated solvents and petroleum compounds in groundwater. Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) was selected to remove contaminant mass in the source area. During ERH, 3-D Microemulsion® was used for Enhanced Reductive Dechlorination in order to treat the distal plume. Fugro USA Land, Inc. and REGENESIS collaborated on the site design and remedial application, resulting in a reduction in the PCE plume to nearly one-third its original size and reduced the highest PCE concentrations by 2 orders of magnitude.

Combined Remedy Treats TCE Plume at Aerospace SiteAn aerospace manufacturing facility required remediation for a deep and heavily impacted Chlorinated Volatile Organic Compound (cVoc) plume. The extensive depth and size of the plume contributed to the difficulty facing remediation efforts. After conducting pilot tests, Alta Environmental and REGENESIS concluded that Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation (EISB) technology was both cost-effective and feasible for successful remediation of this site. The observation wells continue to be sampled quarterly and are displaying successful reductions in cVOCs.

Dr. Mark Kram is the Founder and CTO for Groundswell Technologies, Inc., a group specializing in automated Cloud based monitoring and modeling of environmental sensor and analytical instrumentation networks. Dr. Kram earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Management from the University of California at Santa Barbara, an M.S. degree in Geology from San Diego State University, and his B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
