PFAS Action Plan
The US EPA’s PFAS Action Plan was updated in February of 2020, and provides guidance for state and municipal agencies on how to protect communities from PFAS contaminants.
PFAS Action Plan
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its PFAS Action Plan in 2019 and updated the plan in February of 2020. This is a guidance document that provide a broad overview of recommendations for state and local communities, as well as specific steps that the EPA has taken to address PFAS contamination. US EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler states that the EPA has made “progress in all of our program areas—from groundwater cleanup guidance, to new test methods that are helping to move our research efforts forward, to updates to our Toxics Release Inventory, to progress on updating our drinking water standards.”
PFOA and PFOS are abbreviations for the chemicals “perfluorooctanoic acid” (PFOA) and “perfluorooctanesulfonic acid” (PFOS). These compounds are recalcitrant – or in layperson’s terms, not readily degradable – and as a result are ubiquitous in the environment. These chemicals are of concern because they have now been detected in groundwater, drinking water, and soils in many of our local communities. This creates a potential exposure pathway to humans and possible health risks.
