DNT is a nitro aromatic explosive that exists as six isomers: 2,4- and 2,6- DNT are the two major forms; 2,3-DNT, 2,5-DNT, 3,4-DNT and 3,5-DNT are minor isomers.
Uses
Used as an intermediate in the production of ammunition, polyurethane polymers, dyes, plasticizers and automobile airbags.
Sources & Potential Exposure
Found in waste streams of DNT manufacturing or processing facilities.Expected to remain in water for long periods of time because of its relatively low volatility and moderate water solubility.Adverse effects identified in the blood, nervous system, liver and kidney in animals after exposure.
Federal Regulations
Classified as a Class B2, probable human carcinogen.
