Featured Case Study | Petrofix Estimated to Save $1M Compared to Long-Term Monitoring

Technical Bulletin | Laboratory and Field Results Documenting the Biodegradation of Contaminants from Colloidal Activated Carbon

The colloidal activated carbon (CAC) technologies developed by REGENESIS, PetroFix and PlumeStop, are often paired with biostimulating electron acceptors or donors to destroy adsorbed contaminants. Laboratory and field research with our CAC-based technologies has shown the ability of bacteria to fully mineralize adsorbed contaminants and increase in population in the presence of CAC and electron acceptors or donors added to the system even though the CAC has a tiny diameter (1–2 micrometers). This tech bulletin provides an abbreviated overview of laboratory experiments and a fieldwork demonstration that shows evidence for the biodegradation of contaminants from CAC.

The case studies included in this multi-site review include sites where a leading Ohio Valley environmental consulting firm BJAAM Environmental, Inc. effectively used PetroFix in supporting their risk-based corrective action (RBCA) site closure strategy. In recent years, BJAAM has utilized PetroFix® Remediation Fluid (PetroFix) to eliminate risks and obtain regulatory closures at UST sites impacted by petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs). PetroFix aligns with BJAAM’s strategy for managing UST sites as a remedial technology, rapidly reducing and sustaining PHC contaminants below cleanup targets to expedite regulatory closures.
