When Chase Hartsell learned about an open Research and Development internship with REGENESIS® earlier this year, he was intrigued, since his experience in groundwater flow and chemical engineering seemed to complement much of REGENESIS’ products and solutions. He shares, “I was fortunate to be connected to the company by a friend, and right away I was interested in what REGENESIS specialized in. At UC Santa Barbara, much of my education has been focused around things like chemical adsorption and water flow, and I knew the research and development field would be well suited to that. In addition to the technical aspects that drew me in, all of the employees I spoke to were super welcoming. I knew this would be an excellent opportunity and a fun place to spend my summer.” Hartsell was hired in March of this year, and officially started his summer internship in June. Prior to joining REGENESIS, he spent a year at a startup company located in Huntington Beach, CA, where he assisted the lead chemist with the development of a chemical separator, a project he recalls with great enthusiasm. “The separator was using a completely new and revolutionary technology and I was privileged to be a part of its development. In addition to designing the piping and flow specifications of the separator, I also helped with modeling temperature and pressures of the flow as material passed through the separator. I learned a lot of transferable, real-world lab skills that definitely help me here at REGENESIS.”

An incoming senior at UC Santa Barbara, where he is majoring in Chemical Engineering and on track to graduate Suma Cum Laude, Hartsell says he enjoys the R&D aspects of his work, partly because it involves creativity and a wide range of lab instrumentation. He continues, “Here at REGENESIS, I have the flexibility to brainstorm and take creative angles to the project I am working on. In addition to research, I have also learned a fair amount of lab procedures, such as working with gas chromatography. Experience with lab instruments was one of the main aspects that drew me to the opportunity, and I am happy I’ve had a chance to try out and use some of the machines I heard about every day in my university studies.” He is also enjoying the marketing aspects of his internship, which he performs on Mondays. He shares, “In the past, I worked for my father, helping him with marketing and outreach for his consulting company. This taught me a great amount of professional etiquette that I bring to the workplace every day here at REGENESIS.” He chose to pursue a career in environmental remediation partly because of his keen interest in groundwater flow and absorption. “I always thought that doing something I am good at and doing something I love will bring me the most happiness, and I am definitely checking off both of those boxes by working here at REGENESIS. It’s also nice to know I am working on projects that will likely become solutions and used in the real world to help people and assist in preserving the environment!”

In his free time, Hartsell enjoys a variety of recreational opportunities, and not surprisingly, most of them include water. “Growing up in Orange County makes it hard not to go to the beach. On my off days I love to surf, and when the waves are flat I go free diving. In addition, I have also been DJ’ing in Santa Barbara quite often, and I have recently been getting DJ gigs at clubs downtown. Aside from being an excellent creative outlet, it’s been great fun.”

REGENESIS is proud to welcome Chase Hartsell to the team as a Research and Development intern, and we appreciate his experience and enthusiasm in assisting to developing successful remediation outcomes for REGENESIS and its clients.
