Creative Combined Remedy Using Sorption and Biodegradation Applied at Historic Industrial Manufacturing Site

Historic industrial manufacturing operations over the last 100 years at a facility in the Ohio River Valley have resulted in PCE and TCE impacts to 7,500 square feet of shallow groundwater. To move the redevelopment of this site forward, groundwater VOC sample results must meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for four consecutive quarters. Download the case study to learn about the combined remedy using PlumeStop, HRC, and BDI+ to address the contaminants.

Turn Polluted Aquifers into Purifying Filters with PlumeStop

Contaminant retardation is now a controllable variable with PlumeStop. PlumeStop Liquid Activated Carbon is a break-through groundwater remediation technology that reduces dissolved phase contaminant plumes in days. Composed of extremely fine particles of activated carbon (1‐2μm) suspended in water through a proprietary dispersion chemistry, PlumeStop flows into the subsurface at low pressure and achieves wide-spread distribution – a capability unlike any other form of activated carbon used for groundwater remediation today.

Low-cost Bioremediation of Chlorinated Solvents

HRC® is an engineered, hydrogen release compound designed specifically for enhanced, in situ anaerobic bioremediation of chlorinated compounds in groundwater or highly saturated soils. HRC enables enhanced anaerobic biodegradation by adding hydrogen (an electron donor) to groundwater and/or soil to increase the number and vitality of indigenous microorganisms able to perform the naturally occurring process of enhanced reductive dechlorination. Due to its capability of being applied via permanent wells, direct-push, and excavations, this reagent allows for clean, low-cost, non-disruptive application.

Accelerated Treatment of Intermediate Compounds

Bio-Dechlor INOCULUM® Plus (BDI Plus) is designed to provide an effective treatment of undesirable anaerobic dechlorination intermediates such as dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), and is a low-cost means of enhancing the anaerobic biodegradation process. Once in place, this microbial consortium accelerates the rate of chlorinated contaminant degradation from parent compounds to intermediates like DCE and VC and completely through to harmless end products such as ethene and ethane. It is highly compatible with a range of electron donors.

June 2018 Newsletter

June 15, 2018 REGENESISEstimated Reading Time: 5 minutes

A former manufacturing facility located in western Arizona has been an active Underground Storage Tank (UST) case with the State of Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) for over 30 years. Following review of a wide range of remediation technologies, the team at Antea Group, led by Project Professional Nick Alfino, selected a combined remedy approach using soil mixing with RegenOx® and H2O2 in the source zone, and ISCO injections using PersulfOx® in the core plume. Read more here.

Destroy a Wide-Range of Contaminants through ISCO

PersulfOx is an advanced in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) reagent that promotes rapid and sustained destruction of a wide-range of organic contaminants. It is an all-in-one product with a built-in catalyst which activates the sodium persulfate component and generates contaminant-destroying free radicals without the costly and potentially hazardous addition of a separate activator. The patented catalyst enhances the oxidative destruction of both petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated contaminants in the subsurface.

ISCO Solution Gets Sites to Closure Quickly

RegenOx® is an injectable, two-part ISCO reagent that combines a solid sodium percarbonate-based alkaline oxidant with a patented surface catalyst system, resulting in a powerful contaminant destroying technology.

Remediation Technology Proven in the Field

ORC Advanced® is an engineered, oxygen release compound designed specifically for enhanced, in situ aerobic bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater and saturated soils. ORC Advanced technology and applications have been tailored around the remediation needs of the retail petroleum industry, and have resulted in decreased time to site closure, and degradation rates accelerated up to 100 times faster than natural degradation rates.

Nick Alfino, Project Professional at Antea Group

When you ask Nick Alfino, Project Professional at Antea Group USA, Inc., about his role within the company, it quickly becomes apparent he is tasked with a broad range of responsibilities. Shares Alfino, “I really enjoy my position, especially the diversity of the projects I work on. I like that each day is a new challenge in a different industry or practice area. Site Goals Achieved in Two Months at Former Manufacturing Facility using Combined Remedy Approach

This case study reviews a contaminated manufacturing site in Santa Barbara, California. A former manufacturing operation had left PCE and TCE contaminant levels above regulatory limits with previous remediation approaches attempted without complete success. Applying a combined remedy approach, Haro Environmental chose to focus on incorporating a design to rapidly reduce contaminant concentrations for sustained treatment, and reduce the potential for further downgradient migration of the PCE and TCE contaminants. After conducting a pre-field remediation test, the injection interval was reduced from 12 feet to 9 feet with a bottom-up approach, reducing the project costs by 30%. The combination of PlumeStop, HRC and BDI+ successfully eliminated the contaminants and created conditions for sustained treatment at the site.
