Featured Article: The Problem with PFAS Waste Incineration
This article written by Maureen Dooley, VP – Industrial Sector of REGENESIS and published in Environmental Science & Engineering discusses the problem with PFAS waste incineration. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) released a memo placing a moratorium on the incineration of materials containing PFAS. No commercially available disposal or incineration methods have proven effective at preventing the ‘forever chemicals’ from being recycled back into the environment. The use of the colloidal activated carbon (CAC) technology to contain PFAS in place avoids the creation and disposal of wastes whose ultimate fate cannot be assured. CAC has been successfully applied at PFAS-contaminated sites worldwide. The patented CAC technology from REGENESIS filters PFAS from groundwater to remove human and environmental exposure risks.

Article: PFAS Are Everywhere. Now What?
This article written by Steve Barnes of REGENESIS Remediation Services (RRS) and published in Water & Wastes Digest discusses what can be done about PFAS contamination now that it is likely to remain ubiquitous. The immense scope of the PFAS problem demands remedies for high-priority contaminated sites that are effective, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable. Colloidal activated carbon (CAC) treatments have demonstrated years of effectiveness in the field, including the world’s first in situ PFAS treatment achieving 100% PFAS removal (i.e., from several thousand parts per trillion to non-detect levels) for more than six years thus far.

Employee Spotlight: Will Clogan, RRS East Region Project Manager
Ask Will Clogan, REGENESIS Remediation Services (RRS) East Region Project Manager II, what he values most in his work and you will likely get a quick response about the importance of teamwork. That’s because there are numerous facets of his work where he routinely relies on other RRS staff to assist in making sure projects have successful outcomes. With such a large geographical territory and the responsibility of numerous projects at a given time, it is typical for Clogan to encounter a range of challenges. One, in particular, involved a site that called for installing a PRB in weathered bedrock with a large vertical interval. Naturally, teamwork played a key role in the outcome. He shares, “This particular site posed many challenges with the installation of wells and formation acceptance. Every section of the PRB threw a new challenge. RRS field staff, REGENESIS technical support, and our client collaborated daily to overcome the challenges. Eventually, the collective support and creativity allowed the team to overcome the challenges and install the PRB.”

Enhanced MNA – The Future of PFAS Remediation
President and CEO, Scott Wilson published a technical article building on recent Remediation Journal articles outlining an enhanced monitored natural attenuation approach to treating PFAS contaminants. Originally shared on LinkedIn, the article discusses the future of PFAS groundwater remediation: enhanced natural attenuation. If history is a guide, the threat of “Forever Chemicals” (PFAS) spreading from industrial facilities, airports, and military bases will largely be remedied by allowing natural processes to take their course. With the enormous cost of operating inefficient pump and treat systems and the attendant generation of hazardous waste, there is every reason to believe that natural attenuation will become the “go-to” remediation strategy for this suite of contaminants as well. Download the full article below.
Client Spotlight: Elizabeth Bishop, Senior Technical Specialist at Haley & Aldrich
For Elizabeth Bishop, Senior Technical Specialist at Haley & Aldrich, Inc., working in the environmental remediation industry is especially satisfying because she gets to work with great people while simultaneously helping to preserve our planet for future generations. Bishop initially joined Haley & Aldrich as a Technical Specialist eight years ago, before being promoted to her current senior level position. In her current role with Haley & Aldrich, she designs remedies and solutions for contaminated sites, coordinates and plans the implementation, and manages or trains others to oversee or conduct the work. She adds, “I then evaluate the data as it comes in to determine the efficacy of the remedy. I look at sites holistically for natural attenuation, studying the metagenomics and geochemistry, to gain a better understanding of what is going on in the subsurface at my sites.”

The Challenge of Remediating PFAS in Groundwater, and How to Overcome It
This article published in Water Quality Products discusses the challenges of remediating PFAS in groundwater, and approaches to overcome it. Identifying the sources of PFAS-impacted groundwater and remediating these sources is critical to maintaining safe drinking water. PFAS’s non-degrading, bioaccumulating nature has led to establishing some of the lowest cleanup levels of any groundwater contaminants — less than 10 parts per trillion in some cases — equivalent to one-half-drop in an Olympic pool. Removing the risk of a potential receptor’s PFAS exposure is the goal of all PFAS remediation.
