Vapor Intrusion Effectively Mitigated at Former Landfill Site

Retro-Coat Helps Speed Real Estate Transaction

An office building located on the San Francisco Peninsula was left vacant for multiple years. The building is located on top of a capped landfill which is a known methane producer. After a recent change in ownership, it was important for the new owner to make the necessary improvements to the building so that the new tenants could move in quickly. One of these improvements was to update the vapor mitigation system to ensure the tenant’s safety from any harmful vapor intrusion.

The owner enlisted the expertise of Langan to update the vapor mitigation system. Langan proposed using Retro-Coat Vapor Intrusion Coating System because of its proven resistance to harmful vapors and its durability. The owner was thoroughly pleased with this application because it accomplished two goals with a single product: it mitigated the harmful vapor intrusion and provided a durable coating for the floor of the basement level. Retro-Coat’s multi0functionality saved the site owner time and money.

Client Spotlight: Sigrida Reinis, PhD, PE, Associate at LanganAsk Sigrida Reinis, PhD, what she likes most about her work, and she’ll likely respond by saying she enjoys the challenge of addressing complex environmental remediation projects, much like a modern day detective. It’s just one reason Reinis, an Associate at Langan Engineering and Environmental Services, looks forward to her work. Shares Reinis, “I like solving mysteries, and in the environmental engineering world, we are often confronted with the unexpected – weird data, odd trends, and bizarre existing site conditions, to name just a few. Figuring out how the dots are connected or how to make the best of a less than perfect situation is what makes the work both interesting and engaging.” The day-to-day challenges associated in the cleanup of various sites, coupled with the continued growth of Langan Engineering and Environmental Services are, in part, why Reinis has continued to enjoy her role with the Langan team for more than 20 years. 10 Reasons to Consider Retro-Coat to Protect Your Property Investment

10 Reasons to Consider Retro-Coat to Protect Your Property InvestmentVapor intrusion occurs when there is migration of vapor-forming chemicals from any subsurface contaminant source into an overlying building. When vapor intrusion is detected, it becomes necessary to design a solution to mitigate the problem. Retro-Coat™, a chemically resistant coating designed to resist aggressive chemical vapors, is a cost- effective technology with many advantages over alternative options for existing structures and has been gaining popularity and acceptance as an effective vapor intrusion mitigation. 9 Reasons to Consider Geo-Seal to Protect Your Property Investment

9 Reasons to Consider Geo-Seal to Protect Your Property InvestmentBio-Dechlor INOCULUM® Plus (BDI Plus) is designed to provide rapid and effective treatment of undesirable anaerobic dechlorination intermediates such as dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), and is a low-cost means of enhancing the anaerobic biodegradation process. Once in place, this microbial consortium accelerates the rate of chlorinated contaminant degradation from parent compounds to intermediates like DCE and VC and completely through to harmless end products such as ethene and ethane. It is highly compatible with a range of electron donors.

Upcoming Webinar: In-Situ Remediation vs Pump and Treat
In this webinar we are pleased to have as a special guest speaker Matt Burns, Technical Fellow and the U.S. Contaminated Land National Service Line Director for WSP. In this webinar he will discuss project case studies where in situ remediation was chosen as an alternative compared to conventional liability management strategies due to significant cost-savings. Matt Burns will be joined by Maureen Dooley, Director of Strategic Projects at REGENESIS.This live webinar starts Thursday, May 30th, 2019 at 11am pacific/2pm eastern.

    PFAS Contamination in Minnesota
In this webinar we are pleased to have a special guest presentation by Virginia (Ginny) Yingling, Senior Hydrogeologist in the Environmental Health Division of the Minnesota Department of Health. Ginny discusses PFAS contamination in Minnesota, including lessons learned from the state’s investigation of a chemical production facility, contaminant fate and transport, and reducing exposure. She is joined by Kristen Thoreson, PhD, Director of Research and Development at REGENESIS.
