What is Trichlorofluoromethane (Freon 11)?
Trichlorofluoromethane appears as a clear light colored liquid. Nearly odorless. Denser than water. It is a halomethane and a chlorofluorocarbon.
It has a role as a refrigerant and an environmental contaminant. In refrigeration machinery requiring a refrigerant effective at negative pressures; as aerosol propellant.
Sources & Potential Exposure
Primary hazard is to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit spread to the environment. Easily penetrates the soil to contaminate groundwater and nearby waterways.Trichlorofluoromethane can affect you when breathed in and may be absorbed through the skin. Trichlorofluoromethane can irritate the skin and eyes. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite.
Overexposure can make you feel cause light headedness and dizzyness. High exposure can cause irregular heartbeat, which can be fatal. This can occur without other warning symptoms. Exposure can cause dryness and cracking of the skin. Breathing Trichlorofluoromethane can irritate the lungs causing coughing and/or shortness of breath.
Trichlorofluoromethane has not been tested for its ability to cause cancer in animals or humans.
