Vapor Intrusion Mitigation Overview

Vapor intrusion mitigation is designed to protect enclosed structures from the infiltration of potentially harmful vapors resulting from subsurface contamination. One of the most effective means of mitigating vapor intrusion is through the placement of a physical, chemical resistant vapor intrusion barrier between the contaminated media and the structure. Depending on the application (new or existing construction) this can be accomplished using multi-layered barrier products and/or coatings. In addition to physical barriers, additional measures can be incorporated which include the use of active venting systems which remove vapors from the subsurface. However, it should be noted that vapor intrusion mitigation does not remove the source of the contamination, but rather it aims to mitigate and control the problem by blocking contaminated vapors from finding a pathway into the structure. As a result, vapor intrusion mitigation is often used in conjunction with in situ groundwater and soil remediation solutions. In 2007, REGENESIS formed Land Science Technologies – a specialized division dedicated to advancing vapor intrusion mitigation technology. Its suite of industry-leading vapor intrusion mitigation products that provide both new construction and existing structures with a capable line of defense against contaminant vapor intrusion.

FAQs about Vapor Intrusion Mitigation

Vapor Intrusion Mitigation protects new or existing structures from harmful vapors that may be present in the subsurface. Many times, effective treatment involves placing a physical, chemically resistant barrier in between the slab and the subsurface. Vapor intrusion mitigation can also be achieved through a resistant, impermeable coating like Land Science® Retro-Coat™.

Vapor Intrusion Mitigation is safe when treated with the proper mitigation techniques. It is important to note that vapor intrusion mitigation does not eliminate the contaminant, rather it safely prevents the vapor from intruding into the building. In order to eliminate the contaminant, vapor intrusion mitigation is often used in conjunction with in situ groundwater and soil remediation solutions.

Typically vapor intrusion mitigation systems can be installed quickly, within days, and should only require one application to be rendered effective.
