PlumeStop® is a sustainable in situ solution that provides immediate and long-term elimination of risk from PFAS plumes. PlumeStop adsorbs PFAS in groundwater, preventing further migration and providing enhanced attenuation of the residual plume.

Treatment Mechanisms

  • Injection under low pressure

  • Creation of subsurface filter

  • Adsorption of PFAS influx

  • Long-term treatment

Groundwater Plume Treatment

Injected under low pressure, PlumeStop is installed across the direction of movement of a PFAS groundwater plume. The PlumeStop coats the aquifer in a thin layer of activated carbon. This converts the subsurface into a purifying filter, which rapidly removes PFAS from the groundwater through sorption. This stops the further migration of the contamination and eliminates the risk to downgradient receptors.

About the technology

PlumeStop is a patented colloidal activated carbon, comprising 1-2µm particles of activated carbon suspended in water to create an ‘ink-like’ liquid. PlumeStop is injected into impacted flux zones where it coats the aquifer material in a thin layer of activated carbon. This adsorbs the PFAS influx and prevents further plume migration. PlumeStop provides a powerful combination of:

  • Rapid and highly efficient sorption

  • Long-term treatment

  • Sustainable approach

Awarded ‘Best application of remediation technologies’ at the Brownfield Awards 2023, this project photo shows the injection of PlumeStop.

Warranty

The PlumeStop in situ PFAS remediation approach is supported by our unique PlumeShield warranty. This guarantees that the barrier will continue to eliminate downgradient risk from PFAS in the groundwater.

Combining Plume and Source Treatment

PFAS plume treatment using PlumeStop can be combined with source area treatment using SourceStop®, to meet all on- and offsite remedial requirements. Treatment of the source zone will reduce long-term discharge of PFAS into the groundwater, adsorb high levels of contamination in the groundwater under the spill location and enhance the attenuation of the plume. The PlumeStop barrier will then immediately eliminate risk to downgradient receptors.
