Case Study: PFAS Eliminated for 3.5 Years and Counting at DoD Airfield Site
This updated case study reviews a pilot test to remove PFAS risk via an in situ colloidal activated carbon barrier at Camp Grayling, a large year-round military training center operated by the Michigan Army National Guard (MIARNG). Colloidal activated carbon was selected because of the expected rapid reductions of PFAS by removal from the dissolved mobile phase, as well as its expected lower total project costs when compared to operating a mechanical system over a similar time. The goals for this pilot project were to utilize an approach that could both protect the Grayling community from exposure and cost-effectively expand to a full-scale application.

Article: Canadian Environmental Remediation Experts Lead Efforts to Address PFAS
The current issue of Water Canada highlights the remedial success of the first known PFAS site successfully treated to eliminate risk in Canada. Rick McGregor, President of InSitu Remediation Services, Ltd., was the first to demonstrate successful in-situ treatment of PFAS in groundwater. Modeling results at the first successful site in Canada indicate the colloidal activated carbon (CAC) treatment will be effective for more than 60 years. In-situ treatment of PFAS with CAC is now being implemented at a fraction of the cost of operating a groundwater extraction and sorption system. This method is now being used internationally with sites seeing successful results around the globe.

Enhanced MNA – The Future of PFAS Remediation

Originally shared on LinkedIn, the article discusses the future of PFAS groundwater remediation: enhanced natural attenuation. If history is a guide, the threat of “Forever Chemicals” (PFAS) spreading from industrial facilities, airports, and military bases will largely be remedied by allowing natural processes to take their course. With the enormous cost of operating inefficient pump and treat systems and the attendant generation of hazardous waste, there is every reason to believe that natural attenuation will become the “go-to” remediation strategy for this suite of contaminants as well. For Elizabeth Bishop, Senior Technical Specialist at Haley & Aldrich, Inc., working in the environmental remediation industry is especially satisfying because she gets to work with great people while simultaneously helping to preserve our planet for future generations. Bishop initially joined Haley & Aldrich as a Technical Specialist eight years ago, before being promoted to her current senior level position. In her current role with Haley & Aldrich, she designs remedies and solutions for contaminated sites, coordinates and plans the implementation, and manages or trains others to oversee or conduct the work. She adds, “I then evaluate the data as it comes in to determine the efficacy of the remedy. I look at sites holistically for natural attenuation, studying the metagenomics and geochemistry, to gain a better understanding of what is going on in the subsurface at my sites.”

The Challenge of Remediating PFAS in Groundwater, and How to Overcome It
This article published in Water Quality Products discusses the challenges of remediating PFAS in groundwater, and approaches to overcome it. Identifying the sources of PFAS-impacted groundwater and remediating these sources is critical to maintaining safe drinking water. PFAS’s non-degrading, bioaccumulating nature has led to establishing some of the lowest cleanup levels of any groundwater contaminants — less than 10 parts per trillion in some cases — equivalent to one-half-drop in an Olympic pool. Removing the risk of a potential receptor’s PFAS exposure is the goal of all PFAS remediation.

Article: Treating PFAS at Camp Greyling
The Military Engineer discusses the in-situ treatment of PFAS at Camp Grayling, the largest National Guard training installation in the United States. The Michigan Department of Military and Veteran Affairs (DMVA) proactively tested an innovative in-situ reactive barrier application of colloidal activated carbon. At the first sampling event, approximately one month after injection, the colloidal activated carbon barrier reduced PFAS to below the standard method detection limit of 10-ng/L in downgradient wells. The barrier has since maintained these PFAS reductions for close to three years now (980 days).

New Research Article Provides Guidelines for Monitored Natural Attenuation of PFAS Contaminants in Groundwater

Newell et al. published in Wiley’s Remediation Journal discusses practical guidelines based on a three-tiered line of evidence (LOE) approach for evaluating monitored natural attenuation (MNA) of PFAS. The approach outlined provides methods to assess PFAS retention in the subsurface. This video includes a technical explanation of how PlumeStop colloidal activated carbon functions within an aquifer to purify groundwater of PFAS contamination. Eliminate the Risk of PFAS with Colloidal Activated Carbon
In situ remediation with colloidal activated carbon eliminates risk of PFAS contamination in soil and groundwater at a low-cost. By coating flux zones of an aquifer with colloidal activated carbon, a permeable sorption barrier is created in situ, purifying groundwater as it passively migrates. PFAS constituents from up-gradient source zones are rapidly sorbed to the carbon and removed from the mobile dissolved phase. By removing PFAS from the mobile phase, the route of exposure to down-gradient receptors is eliminated, thereby eliminating the down-gradient public health risk associated with PFAS.

New Research Article Provides Guidelines for Monitored Natural Attenuation of PFAS Contaminants in Groundwater
This article by Charles J. Newell et al. published in Wiley’s Remediation Journal discusses practical guidelines based on a three-tiered line of evidence (LOE) approach for evaluating monitored natural attenuation (MNA) of PFAS. The approach outlined provides methods to assess PFAS retention in the subsurface. It also includes a list of methods to enhance MNA of PFAS plumes if MNA alone is not sufficient to manage the risk of the plume. Read the full article below.

Case Study: PFAS Removed from Aquifer at Hazardous AFFF Site
This case study reviews a Pennsylvania Hazardous Site Cleanup Act (HSCA) project where aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) extinguished a large fire in the 1980s was the target of an innovative pilot study to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Working closely on behalf of the PADEP, Tetra Tech, a leading provider of consulting, engineering, and technical services worldwide, was principally involved in assessing the options and choosing a technology for the pilot test. This effort led to the decision to conduct a pilot study using PlumeStop®, a patented colloidal activated carbon amendment known to eliminate the risk of PFAS.

Video: Effective PFAS Remediation Makes Way for Brownfield Development
A 25-acre former refinery located in a mixed-use industrial/commercial area was contaminated with PFAS. Benchmark Environmental Engineering & Science, PLLC & TurnKey Environmental Restoration, LLC, a leading engineering and redevelopment consulting company headquartered in Buffalo, NY, engaged REGENESIS for an in-situ remedy that would effectively and economically cut off the plume and prevent migration of PFAS offsite. The site was entered into the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (NYSDEC’s) Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP) to facilitate its commercial redevelopment.

If enacted, the PFAS Action Act would require the United States Environmental Protection Agency to designate two PFAS, known as PFOA and PFOS, as Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act “hazardous substances” within one year and to make a similar determination on other PFAS substances within five years.
