    Featured Case Study | PlumeStop Shuts Down Pump and Treat System at Superfund Site

    This case study reviews a large federally operated Superfund site where REGENESIS Remediation Services (RRS) completed a large-scale PlumeStop application to eliminate the risk of exposure to chlorinated solvents. The PlumeStop treatment prevented plume migration, protecting nearby community drinking water wells. This sustainable approach eliminates the massive carbon footprint created by outdated pump-and-treat approaches.

    Amentum, a leading American governmental and commercial services contractor, is the responsible party’s contractor. Amentum has worked with the client at this site for years, providing oversight and management of their contracting partners. The project’s sensitive nature required an enhanced awareness of health, safety, and security issues and seamless coordination between RRS, Amentum, and their client.

    Article | Combined Remedy Rapidly Achieves Targets to Address Chlorinated Solvent Impacts

    This article reviews an active industrial facility in Southern California impacted by PCE and TCE, where a technology-based solution from REGENESIS quickly reduces CVOC concentration below targets, priming the site for future closure. The remedy included a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) in which the co-application of PlumeStop and S-MicroZVI combines a massive surface area for contaminant sorption with the rapid degradation of CVOCs to non-toxic end products such as ethene, ethane, and carbon dioxide. These end products, which do not bind to carbon, free up PlumeStop’s sorption sites on the aquifer matrix. As PlumeStop is regenerated, the PRB’s treatment capacity is further extended.

    Case Study | PlumeStop and S-MicroZVI Effectively Treat CVOCs to Expedite Site Closure

    In addition to the RemTec article, this case study provides a more in-depth overview on an active industrial facility in Southern California where PlumeStop and S-MicroZVI successfully treated CVOC contamination. The combined remedy quickly reduced CVOC concentrations below targets, priming the site for future regulatory closure. The responsible party retained Roux, a leading environmental remediation consultant, to complete the remediation project. Specifically, the remedy needed to (1) reduce CVOCs in soil, soil vapor, and groundwater to background contamination levels; (2) minimize disruption to the site tenant occupying the building; (3) coordinate with offsite property owners to complete the work; and (4) complete all work within established budgets and timeframes.

    Case Study | PlumeStop Eliminates PFAS for Seven Years

    This case study reviews the first known full-scale in situ PFAS treatment worldwide completed in 2016 at a manufacturing and former firefighting training site in Ontario, Canada, where aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) were used. A single application of PlumeStop resulted in the reduction of contaminant concentrations to non-detect levels, with reductions maintained for 7+ years since the injection. Remediation company IRSL collected critical treatment zone information to ensure a successful application. An independent fate and transport modeling expert predicts that PlumeStop will halt PFAS migration out of the treatment zone for more than 60 years, preventing exposure risk and reducing liabilities for the site owner.

    Case Study | Treatment Solution for TCE Saves Client $380,000

    This case study reviews a former manufacturing facility in Indianapolis that had released high levels of chlorinated solvents into the groundwater, creating a large plume. Wilcox Environmental Engineering, Inc., a leading engineering and consulting firm based in Indianapolis, was hired by the responsible party to investigate the site. After evaluating the remedial options, Wilcox worked with REGENESIS to design a solution for in situ remediation of the TCE plume using biogeochemical reduction in the onsite plume area and sorption-enhanced chemical reduction in the offsite plume. This combined in situ remediation solution rapidly mitigated a threat to a nearby river and saved the client $380,000.

    Case Study |  Pilot Projects at Two UK Airports Demonstrate Successful PFAS Remediation

    This case study reviews two airport sites in the United Kingdom where the groundwater was contaminated with PFAS that had originated from the use of Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF). An in situ approach using colloidal activated carbon permeable reactive barriers (PRB) combined with successful pilot study results allowed for regulatory permission for full-scale PlumeStop PRB installations on both sites. The PlumeStop PRB converts the contaminant flux zones in the treatment area into subsurface filters, which adsorb incoming contamination and stop offsite migration. This prevents risk to downgradient receptors, removes offsite liability from the site owner and allows Enhanced Natural Attenuation (ENA) of the downgradient PFAS plume.

    Case Study | PlumeStop Treats PFAS and Protects Island Community Resources

    This case study reviews a site at Martha’s Vineyard Airport where a PlumeStop permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was used to treat PFAS. PlumeStop PRBS filter PFAS out of groundwater, sorbing the contaminants onto the aquifer matrix and preventing further plume migration. In less than four months, PlumeStop has eliminated PFAS mass flux immediately downgradient of the barrier and significantly reduced PFAS concentrations further away, as monitoring continues. The cost-effective and sustainable solution to remove PFAS exposure risk provides an alternative to expensive and ineffective pump & treat (P&T) systems.

    Download Case Study | PetroFix PRB Prevents Offsite Risk at Gas Station

    This case study reviews an active gas station in the United Kingdom where dissolved phase contamination at high concentrations in groundwater migrated beyond the site boundary, resulting in a potential off-site liability. An in situ permeable reactive barrier (IPRB) using PetroFix colloidal activated carbon was installed to prevent offsite risk. Environmental consulting firm SLR Consulting partnered with REGENESIS to design and apply the solution, which quickly met site objectives. The PetroFix IPRB was the most sustainable option for the site. Substantial energy savings were made when compared with operating a groundwater pump and treat system. The project was completed for <£100K ($127,300 USD), with only minimal disruption to site operations.

    Case Study | Sustainable and Low-Cost PFAS Source Treatment

    This case study reviews the in situ treatment of PFAS source zones at firefighting training areas on two aviation sites where PFAS-containing AFFF was historically discharged. Both pilot tests demonstrated PFAS soil leachate concentrations reduced by >99% following the source zone treatments. In situ PFAS source treatments using SourceStop immediately halt PFAS plume development and prevent impacts to downgradient receptors.     Technical Bulletin | S-MicroZVI Performance Over a 4-Year Column Study 

    This technical bulletin documents a soil column study that was performed to evaluate the longevity of S-MicroZVI, an in situ remediation product capable of treating chlorinated solvents via direct chemical reduction reactions. This study exhibited the ability of S-MicroZVI to degrade chlorinated solvents over almost 4 years while substantially limiting the formation of the toxic daughter products CDCE and VC under increasingly demanding conditions. Product persistence is enhanced by the sulfidation of the particle surface which inhibits the unwanted hydrolysis reaction between zero-valent iron and water.

    Case Study | No Further Action for Large PCE Plume Under Main Street, USA

    This case study reviews a former dry cleaner site in western Indiana, where site regulatory closure was achieved after a large dissolved-phase PCE groundwater plume was successfully treated using PlumeStop, enhanced reductive dechlorination (ERD) amendments and S-MicroZVI from REGENESIS. Patriot Engineering, a leading Midwest environmental consulting firm, headquartered in Indianapolis, specified ERD as the most practical and economically viable method to effectively treat the large plume. By combining remediation technologies from REGENESIS with a highly efficient and cost-effective remediation design, Patriot’s treatment approach eliminated the PCE plume. Subsequent performance monitoring and analysis completed by Patriot demonstrated plume stability, earning the site a No Further Action status from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).

    Video | PlumeStop Used to Treat PFAS and Protect Community Resources at Martha’s Vineyard Airport

    Martha’s Vineyard Airport is used by a significant number of general aviation aircraft with a high number flying in during the summer months. Over the years, as required by the FAA, the airport has conducted fire training exercises releasing AFFF fire-fighting foams in an area adjacent to the runway. Beginning in November 2018 as awareness and concern about PFAS in AFFF were increasing, Martha’s Vineyard Airport proactively identified an approach to contain AFFF testing solutions. As a result of the AFFF releases, the groundwater has been impacted with PFAS contaminants that are now being proactively treated by the airport. Tasked with evaluating available options to address the PFAS impacts, TetraTech worked with REGENESIS to develop a remedial design incorporating permeable reactive barriers emplaced in situ using PlumeStop colloidal activated carbon.

    Video | PlumeStop Cost-Effectively Treats CVOCs at Secure Government Facility

    A large, secure government facility in the Mid-Atlantic region was designated a Superfund site under CERCLA. The high-security area had been used as a salvage yard where activities requiring cleaning solvents, among other volatile materials, had leached into the groundwater, creating a large plume in the sandy geology. Amentum, a leading American government and commercial services contractor, is the responsible party’s contractor and has worked with the client at this location for years, providing oversight and management of their contracting partners throughout this and other environmental remediation projects. A remedial approach was designed to reduce and degrade the CVOC contaminants while protecting against the groundwater plume’s migration beyond the site’s boundaries.

    Video | FluxTracers Precisely Target Contaminants and Save $380,000 in Project Costs

    This video reviews a former industrial site in downtown Indianapolis where chlorinated solvents in groundwater were threatening to impact the nearby White River. Wilcox Environmental, a leading consulting firm based in Indianapolis, collaborated with REGENESIS on a remediation solution incorporating PlumeStop and S-MicroZVI to treat the contaminants. FluxTracer®, a contaminant flux mapping tool from REGENESIS, was employed to identify the target treatment zones carrying contaminant mass. The use of FluxTracers enabled the team onsite to deliver PlumeStop and S-MicroZVI precisely to treat target contaminants, and also saved the client $380,000 in project costs.

    Featured Article | Results Document the Biodegradation of Contaminants from Colloidal Activated Carbon

    This article published in Remediation Technology provides an abbreviated overview of two laboratory experiments and a fieldwork demonstration that showed evidence for the biodegradation of contaminants from colloidal activated carbon (CAC). The CAC technologies developed by REGENESIS are often paired with biostimulating electron acceptors or donors to destroy adsorbed contaminants. Laboratory and field research on these technologies has shown the ability of bacteria to fully mineralize adsorbed contaminants and increase in population in the presence of CAC and electron acceptors or donors added to the system.

    Reusable Packaging News | Unseen PFAS Risk Found in Food Packaging Impacts Drinking Water

    This article published in Waste Advantage discusses the importance of sustainable solutions to prevent human and environmental exposures to PFAS caused by landfills. PFAS-contaminated groundwater is a serious environmental issue facing most solid waste disposal facilities. Colloidal Activated Carbon (CAC) is a more sustainable and environmentally responsible approach. Installed CAC treatments are a fraction of the cost of other PFAS treatment methods, produce no greenhouse gas emissions or disposal wastes, and do not consume energy. CAC effectively coats the aquifer, forming a permeable sorptive barrier and filtering out PFAS as groundwater passes through the barrier.

    PlumeStop colloidal activated carbon utilizes activated carbon finely milled to <2µm (the size of a red blood cell) and suspended in a colloidal fluid to be injected under low pressure into the subsurface. The carbon particles disperse and diffuse, and then adhere to the surface of soil particles, converting contaminated aquifers into purifying filters.     Alameda Post Article – Navy to Lock Down PFAS in Groundwater with Carbon

    This article published in the Alameda Post discusses the Navy’s use of injecting colloidal activated carbon (CAC), commercially sold as PlumeStop, into the subsurface to prevent PFAS contaminant migration. The goal of the project is to prevent the movement of PFAS into the Oakland Estuary. The approach using CAC subsurface injection was chosen as a low-cost alternative to pump-and-treat systems. The sustainable use of CAC turns the aquifer into a carbon filter and generates no PFAS waste. Once the carbon filter system is in place and performs as expected, the Navy will most likely utilize this method at other PFAS sites at Alameda Point.

    Martha’s Vineyard Times Article – PFAS mitigation pilot program begins at M.V. Airport

    This article published in the Martha’s Vineyard Times discusses the use of injecting colloidal activated carbon (CAC), commercially sold as PlumeStop, into the subsurface at Martha’s Vineyard Airport. Tetra Tech vice president Ron Myrick, whose firm handled the testing and mitigation of PFAS around the Martha’s Vineyard Airport area and completed the first stage of PFAS investigations in 2019, notified the commission during an August meeting about plans to use a remediation pilot program of “targeted PlumeStop application to assess mitigating further migration of PFAS” off the airport.

    Featured Research Article – Top Groundwater Researchers Highlight 17 Commercial Field Projects Where PlumeStop Successfully Treats PFAS

    Top groundwater researchers in the field of groundwater contaminant fate and transport recently published a REMEDIATION Journal article entitled Longevity of colloidal activated carbon for in situ PFAS remediation at AFFF-contaminated airport sites by Carey et al. The article highlights the application of PlumeStop colloidal activated carbon (CAC) at 17 commercial field projects to effectively treat PFAS in situ. The authors found that the vast majority of PFAS at airport sites are PFOS and PFHxS. This is noteworthy as these contaminants are preferentially sorbed to activated carbon when compared to the polyfluorinated carboxylic acid contaminants (i.e. PFOA) of similar chain length. The article also notes that the use of CAC in situ to treat PFAS is expected to have substantially greater treatment longevity compared to ex situ activated carbon use.

    Featured Case Study: Reductive Dechlorination Approach Treats Large Chlorinated Solvent Plume

    This case study reviews the successful in situ treatment of chlorinated solvents at a former food processing plant located in a suburb south of Indianapolis. PlumeStop, S-MicroZVI, 3DME and BDI Plus were used in combination to strongly inhibit CVOC plume migration near the site property boundary while enhancing abiotic and biotic degradation of CVOCs at this location and in the upgradient plume area. Patriot Engineering and Environmental, Inc. (Patriot), a leading consulting firm based in Indianapolis investigated the site, discovering contaminants had migrated from an unidentified source and formed a large plume. In addition, it was found that the plume was being pulled toward a former (now inactive) public water supply well.

    It is often said “variety is the spice of life”, and for Andrew Kavanagh, Project Manager II in the RRS Midwest Region, this phrase could easily be applied to his work. Kavanagh’s role tasks him with a diverse range of responsibilities- from managing field teams and field personnel, to maintaining equipment, developing and contributing to new ideas and systems, scheduling projects, and much more.     Featured Case Study: PFAS and CVOC Remediation Paves Way for Mixed-Use Tower

    This case study reviews a site where a combined remedy approach was implemented addressing CVOCs, PHCs, metals, PFAS, and 1,4-dioxane. The successful remedial effort earned the site a Certificate of Completion through New York State’s Brownfield Cleanup Program, facilitating the new development in this commercially valuable area. The project, administered through the NY State Brownfield Cleanup Program, was a former electroplating facility with numerous open vats of chemical solvents and acids that gradually leaked and migrated into the fractured bedrock subsurface beneath the site. SESI Consulting Engineers (SESI), a leading environmental engineering services firm based in New Jersey, completed several phases of Remedial Investigation, revealing site soil and groundwater impacted by CVOCs, PHCs, metals, PFAS, and 1,4-dioxane.

    Video: Large Plume Cost-Effectively Remediated at Former Cannery Site

    In this video environmental consulting and engineering firm Patriot Engineering collaborated with REGENESIS to effectively treat CVOCs at a former cannery site in Indiana. The goal at this site was to remediate the chlorinated solvents and eliminate risk, limiting offsite mitigation and bringing contaminants down to Indiana Department of Environmental Management tap water standards. Due to the large size of the plume, cost was a chief concern. After reviewing a range of treatment options, including pump and treat, air sparging with soil vapor extraction, and ISCO combined with ERD, Patriot selected a combined remedial approach from REGENESIS using PlumeStop, S-MicroZVI and 3DME in a sequence of permeable reactive barriers to strongly inhibit plume migration while enhancing biotic and abiotic degradation of the targeted contaminants.
